My husband, the author

It has finally happened. For seven years my husband has been shut away in his study in the evenings. He has been working hard on the commute on the train each day, making fevered notes with little diagrams and arrows. There have been early-hours-of-the-morning excursions downstairs to the laptop when inspiration has struck. There has been A LOT of research. And now, finally, this weekend the much anticipated fruit of all his labours has arrived. Blue Gold is an actual book with a cover and pages and everything. A really fantastic cover with the title picked out in shiny writing (always something that impresses a picture book person!) and lovely beautifully produced pages that support and echo the theme of water in the story.

But, there was a niggling little doubt. For seven years I have held off from reading the story. I read a few chapters early in the process but thrillers are not my thing and I wasn’t very good at giving feedback. There was nearly a divorce. So I resolved to wait until there was a real book in front of me.

Thanks to Urbane Publishing that day arrived at the end of last week. That was two days ago. My initial nervousness evaporated within the first page and what a ride it was after that! I couldn’t put it down and I’ve just finished it. It’s a thrilling story and an effortless read that belies the hard work that has gone on over the years. There’s going to be a bit of a party at Waterstones Piccadilly in a couple of weeks to celebrate and I am really looking forward to sharing my excitement about it. I’m so incredibly proud and I can’t wait for book two next year!

And if anyone has Matt Damon’s telephone number, it would make a great film! The author’s notes will explain all!

Blue Gold is released on 11th May with Urbane.

You can pre-order from Waterstones here. Honestly, you won’t regret it. And I’m not just saying that because my husband is the author (-;
